Plastic spiral wrap has become a widely used form of protection for hydraulic hoses.

The fact that you are looking to install hose protection suggests that you are thinking long-term about prolonging the life of your hoses by preventing damage from impact and wear from abrasion whilst protecting both personnel and the environment. So, to help ensure you achieve your objective make sure you fit a good product which is made the right way from the right material.

There are a number of spiral type hose protection products in the market today. Many of these products have made it to market with little thought given to how they will actually perform out in the field. Some are produced for applications much less demanding than the typical hydraulic application. Some are produced by extruding as a strip and formed in to a spiral, some are produced by cutting from an extruded tube. From a commercial manufacturing point of view extruding and forming is probably the most efficient way to produce. However, it does not result in the highest level of performance in the field because it has a lack of material memory. Our experience tells us that material made by cutting from tube when produced in the most suitable material offers the best level of protection because it tends to retain the material memory of the tube.

There are a host of different materials out there. A few are used in specialist applications perhaps where a high temperature resistance is required or maybe to achieve a certain characteristic. Some of these materials are quite heavy in weight. Some offer low resistance to UV which leads to a shorter life cycle.

Our standard product is cut from a tube in HDPE material. We believe it’s the best combination for most applications providing heavy duty protection with a relatively light weight.

• Fitting, particularly retro-fitting Spiral protection is not the easiest task in the world but it can be made easier by using a quality, well thought out material with strong material memory.
• Size Matters - Dimensions, band width, radius and pitch are all key elements in producing a spiral product that comes close to moving in harmony with your hose.
• Memory Matters - for the guard to work in harmony with your hose it is important for it to have good material memory.
• Weight Matters - Consider the implications of adding hose protection to your hose / hose bundles. Particularly relevant for larger assemblies or umbilicals. For mobile operators, consider the weight you are carrying on your vehicles.

Pig's Tail® Spirals are designed to protect hydraulic hoses, pneumatic hoses and cables against impact and abrasion. Made from high grade HDPE (High Density Polyethelene) the Pig's Tail® Spirals can be installed on new hose assemblies or retro-fitted to existing hoses / cable assemblies.
